How will I know if I can handle working as a massage therapist?

It might sound relaxing and lovely, going to work everyday in a relaxing spa, enjoying the aromatherapy scents, soft lighting, maybe even soft, relaxing music. Good smells, good vibes, and good times!

But that’s just the first impression, isn’t it?

What if someone reminds you that you will be spending time with all kinds of people. People you don’t know. People you may not feel comfortable around.

Not only that, but you’ll be touching them. That will be your job. Massaging all of those people and working to help them relax. You might not like the people who come in to receive a massage. You won’t know until it’s too late!

Is this a picture of serenity like you first thought about at the outset?

How will I know if I will like working as a massage therapist?

There are a few ways to figure out if becoming a massage therapist is actually right for you.

First, ask yourself some honest questions.

Do you tend to feel comfortable around most people?

Do you consider yourself the ‘caretaker’ type?

Is helping others one of the most important things in life to you?

Would the freedom and ability to work in a relaxing atmosphere outweigh any potential negatives that could occur on occasion?

Talk to other massage therapists

Not every massage therapist describes themselves as a ‘people person’ – Yet, even some of those sorts of people will tell you that they love their job as a massage therapist.

Talk to as many different massage therapists as you can and ask them how they handle the most difficult aspects of their job.

Ask them what makes it worth it to them to continue working as a massage therapist. Ask them why they love their job and how they overcame the challenges they faced.

If you really feel you are passionate about the power of touch – If you believe massage therapy is the path you want to walk – Then it’s important that you take time to prepare and build your confidence right here at the beginning. When you talk to a variety of people, instead of just one or two, no matter how you may have to press yourself to get yourself to take that initiative, it’s going to result in a much more relaxed process for you of training to become a massage therapist.

Do your research now instead of letting yourself become overwhelmed with the fear of doubt!
