There are a lot of different types of massage therapy. The massage therapy courses you will take in one massage school might be different than the type of massage therapy you will learn in another massage school.
What are some of the different types of massage therapy?
The following lists a number of different types of massage therapy, but may not be all inclusive.
Classic Massage (also sometimes called Swedish massage)
- Deep Tissue Massage
- Pre-Natal Massage
- Hot Stone Massage
- Sports Massage (Some people use the terms deep tissue massage interchangeably and some do not agree that these are the same.)
- Trigger Point Massage
- Shiatsu Massage
- Reflexology (Can include foot massage, but can be much more than just foot massage as a study)
- Aromatherapy Massage (This could potentially be any of the other massages listed, but with the inclusion of specific types of oils used in the massage methods.)
- Thai Massage
- Chair Massage
Call the massage schools you are interested in and ask them about the specific types of massage therapy they will train you to perform. If you have a specific interest in one massage therapy training type over another, make sure to mention that to the enrollment counselor so they can help steer you in the correct course of study.
